Partnering for a Purpose
Each August, the energy in our community builds as students and families prepare for a new school year. For the third year in a row, we have proudly partnered with United Way of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County to support Tools for School—a back-to-school resource fair that equips local students with everything they need to start the year confident and ready to learn.
Collecting and Preparing Supplies
As one of more than 50 collection points across the area, we have welcomed generous donations of essential school supplies from community members and businesses. Over the course of one week, these donations are gathered, sorted, and packed into brand-new backpacks by dedicated volunteers. Each backpack is carefully prepared with grade-appropriate supplies, ensuring that students—whether in elementary, middle, or high school—have the tools they need from day one.
More Than Just Backpacks
The event is more than just backpacks and pencils. Families check in and then have the opportunity to connect with nearly 20 local organizations that offer valuable resources, services, and support. Past years have even featured free haircuts—a small gesture that makes a big difference in helping students feel confident for that first day back. One of our favorite moments each year is watching children personalize their new backpacks with felt pens and iron-on patches, making them uniquely their own before walking out the door.
Reaching Families Who Need It Most
In 2024, Tools for School provided over 1,700 supply-filled backpacks to more than 300 families. Many of these families fall into the ALICE category—Asset Limited, Income Constrained, and Employed—meaning they are working hard, doing everything they can to make ends meet, but still face challenges affording school essentials. This program helps fill that gap, ensuring no student has to start the year without the supplies they need to succeed.
Driven By Community
The smiles, the excitement, and the sense of pride on a child’s face when they receive their backpack remind us why this event matters. It’s a celebration of community coming together—neighbors helping neighbors, businesses stepping up to support families, and volunteers giving their time to make a difference.
We are honored to be part of Tools for School and grateful for the generosity that makes it possible. When we invest in our students, we invest in the future of our entire community.
